Health and Safety in the WEA

Health and Safety in the Classroom

The Association has a Health & Safety (H&S) Policy that covers both you as an employee of the WEA, and also our learners. You can find out more about the WEA’s approach to employee health and safety through your Regional Office. There is a H&S booklet that focuses on our commitment to our learners’ health and safety.

All learners are entitled to learn in a safe, healthy and supportive environment. You, as tutor, are often the only employed representative of the WEA that a learner may have direct contact with. Part of your role, therefore, is to ensure that learners:

- are fully aware of the health and safety aspects of the venue(s) for the class
- are fully aware of any risks to do with activities in your particular subject and, where appropriate, are aware of and have taken individual measures to minimise these risk
- always act in ways that minimise health and safety risk

The booklet will provide guidelines and information on the systems we have in place to enable you to carry out this important function. The ‘safe learner’ concept is a fundamental value of the Association and your application of the systems we have in place to ensure this are important.

Areas covered in the booklet are:

- Using a Safe Venue
- Preparing a Safe Course
- Running a Safe Course

If you are not already in possession of this booklet please contact me for a copy.
